Chorlton's most famous watering hole!
EASY LIKE SUNDAY MORNING
Saturday, February 4th, 2012
With Sundays at the Jockey more popular than ever, we thought it might be a good time to remind you of a unique service we offer!
Everyone wants to be spoilt on a Sunday, and it looks like the combination of great quality and a decent amount of food at a reasonable price is proving to be a real winner.
The only downside is we sometimes run out of roasts.
Sunday is the one day in the week when we want to kick back, take it easy, chill out, read the papers, go for a walk. What we don't want to do is charge out for lunch when we're not quite ready, just to be sure of getting fed.
The solution.....
.....Pre-order your Sunday roast.
Call us before 12 lunchtime on Sunday, let us know how many roast dinners you would like to pre-order and the time you will be arriving, give us a contact number, and relax. Come along in your own good time.
Now that's what we call easy!
ACOUSTIC NIGHT WEDS 8 FEB
Friday, January 27th, 2012
This month we welcome Taylorandthemason.
Simply put, the band is made up of a couple of girls singing and playing guitars... and sometimes mini Casio Keyboards. Based in Manchester, they are singer-songwriters Becky Taylor (twiddly guitar bits/vocals) and Sally Mason (other guitar bits/vocals/tiny wee keyboard). With influences varying from Motown to Joni Mitchell, expect an eclectic mix of acoustic sounds with extremely close harmonies and powerful vocals.
Here's what some people were paid to say about them:
"Oh you're like two Joni Mitchells on speed"
"Like a female version of The Everly Brothers"
“Taylorandthemason took me by surprise, amazingly close harmonies”
"Loved the new and bright sound. Funny and kept me rocking in my seat"
"Great sound from two great girls! Great to hear such a full on delivery!"

FARMERS' MARKET AND CRAFT FAIR, SAT 28 JAN
Thursday, January 19th, 2012
Our regular market, held on the last Saturday of each month, is with us again for the first time in 2012, on Saturday 28 January.
The cream of the North West's farmers, growers, producers and artisans descend on Chorlton Green to sell directly to the public. Due to the success of our monthly market, we have increased the number of market stalls on the Green from 12 to 16.
With an ever more eclectic range of stall holders at the craft fair inside the pub, and some great new stalls amongst the bunch outside, there has never been a better time to pay us a visit.

WINTER MENU NOW BEING SERVED
Friday, January 13th, 2012
Our new Winter Menu was unveiled on Wednesday, and once again, we've managed to keep 98% of our prices static in these belt-tightening times.
All the old favourites are there, with one or two sure-to-be popular new additions such as a Jockey Mixed Grill, Baked macaroni and cheese with truffle dressed radicchio and Parmesan, and Pan fried cod cheeks on paprika spiced potatoes with chorizo and garlic. The latter was voted best new dish by the staff at a tasting session on Tuesday evening.
We've also taken the opportunity to give the menu layouts an overhaul, in response to one or two customer requests to make them easier to read. We hope we've succeeded!
The full menus are available to read online here
ACOUSTIC NIGHT WEDS 11 JAN
Thursday, January 5th, 2012
We welcome Lauren Housley to the Jockey next Tuesday for our first acoustic night of 2012.
A Yorkshire girl, Lauren is a soulful and mesmerizing vocal artist. Her voice is reminiscent of the late, great, Eva Cassidy but at times can be as raw and powerful as artists such as Gladys Knight, Alicia Keys and even Janis Joplin. Lauren has been working along side producer and musician, Thomas Dibb, to develop her new material.
Combining soulful harmonies and pure melodic mastery, thei...r style of songwriting draws influence from Corinne Bailey Rae, Jill Scott and Amy Winehouse as well as classic songwriters like Stevie Wonder and Carole King. Her sound can be described as ‘soul infused pop’; with new tracks varying from heart felt ballads to funky, grooving numbers.
As a performer and singer, Lauren has an extremely natural aura. She has an overwhelming ability to connect with songs and lyrics, and express them with pure honesty; touching her audience emotionally. Lauren’s soulful yet energetic headlining performance at a local event in Manchester, back in November 2009, landed her with a support slot for The Brand New Heavies at Manchester Academy. Lauren was a new face on the scene for Manchester music lovers but the response to her songs and performance was truly staggering.
Lauren has been performing as a freelance vocalist with various bands, DJs and producers nationwide for over 4 years and is now based in Manchester. After creating a name for herself in the North East and South Yorkshire, she now has her sights set on conquering the Manchester music scene. She is already gaining interest from producers and DJs from across the region, along with an expanding fan base.

A LITTLE BIT OF HISTORY
Monday, December 19th, 2011
Andrew Simpson is a local historian and Horse & Jockey regular. He has written a book about Chorlton - Chorlton-cum-Hardy A Community Transformed - which is released in April 2012. We're having the launch here at the Jockey.
Andrew also writes a blog about the history of Chorlton, and we've got a mention in his latest offering, which you can read here.
Fascinating stuff!
The photo above of the Horse & Jockey was taken around 1900, before the mock Tudor façade was added.
